MUSC has established the Gnotobiotic Research Resource, a “germ free” or “gnotobiotic” animal research facility as a joint initiative of the College of Dental Medicine, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the University Research Resource Facilities program, and the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR). The facility’s mission is to provide investigators at MUSC a unique opportunity to conduct research with germfree or “gnotobiotic” animal models, in addition to more widely available specific-pathogen-free (microbiome is known) animal models.
The gnotobiotic facility, which is located in the state-of-the-art DLAR facility in the Darby Children's Research Institute, occupies a 410 sq. ft. housing area and shares a 260 sq. ft. prep room. At the present time, the facility maintains 12 flexible film Isolators. Each unit is capable of housing approximately 50 mice (12 cages, 4 mice per cage).
